چکیده

We present Swift-UVOT data on the optical afterglow of the X-ray flash of 2005 April 6 (XRF 050406) from 88 s to ∼ 10 5 s after the initial prompt γ-ray emission. Our observations in the V, B and U bands are the earliest that have been taken of an XRF optical counterpart. Combining the early-time optical temporal and spectral properties with γ-and simultaneous X-ray data taken with the BAT and XRT telescopes on-board Swift, we are able to constrain possible origins of the XRF. The prompt emission had a FRED profile (fast-rise, exponential decay) with a duration of T 90 = 5.7 s ± 0.2 s, putting it at the short end of the long-burst duration distribution. The absence of photoelectric absorption red-ward of 4000Å in the UV/optical spectrum provides a firm upper limit of z ≤ 3.1 on the redshift, thus excluding a high redshift as the sole reason for the soft spectrum. The optical light curve is consistent with a power-law decay with slope α = −0.75 ± 0.26 (F ν ∝ t α), and a maximum occurring in the first 200 s after the initial γ-ray emission. The softness of the prompt emission is well described by an off-axis structured jet model, which is able to account for the early peak flux and shallow decay observed in the optical and X-ray bands.

The UVOT telescope on the Swift observatory has detected optical afterglow emission from GRB 050319. The flux declines with a power law slope of α = −0.57 between the start of observations some 230 seconds after the burst onset (90s after the burst trigger) until it faded below the sensitivity threshold of the instrument after ∼ 5 × 10s. There is no evidence for the rapidly declining component ...

We review some of the initial data from the UVOT telescope on the Swift observatory. Statistics based on about six months of data suggest a dark burst fraction of about 50% when combining both UVOT and ground-based observations. There is evidence that some bursts have a large gamma-ray efficiency, which may be due to strong magnetic fields in their ejecta. The bright GRB050525A shows behaviour ...

During its first cycle, the MAGIC (Major Atmospheric Gamma-ray Imaging Cherenkov) telescope was performing an observational campaign covering a total of about 250 hours on galactic sources. Here we review the results for the very high energy (> 100 GeV) γ-ray emission from some of those sources.

We report on optical observations on GRB 000210 obtained with the 2.56m Nordic Optical Telescope and the 1.54-m Danish Telescope starting 12.4 hours after the gamma-ray event. The content of the X-ray error box determined by the Chandra satellite is discussed.

Received ; accepted – 2 – ABSTRACT We have studied five seasons of OGLE-III data for eight SMC Be/X-ray pulsars for which no other survey data were available. We have determined orbital periods for four of these binary systems, one of which also shows nonradial pulsations. Optical identification of SMC X-2 is reconsidered, but no periods were found for either of the two possible candidates.
